When Is the Best Time to Get Newborn Photos Taken?

If you’re expecting a baby, congratulations! One of the questions I hear often as a newborn photographer in Parker, Colorado is: When is the best time to schedule newborn photos? Let’s break it down so you can plan with confidence (and without stress).

The Best Time for Newborn Photos

I typically recommend scheduling newborn photos around two weeks after your baby is born. This window tends to be a sweet spot for a few reasons:

  • Babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those cozy, newborn poses
  • Their features still have that fresh, brand‑new look
  • Feeding routines are usually a little more established
  • Parents have had just enough time to settle in, but not so much that the newborn stage feels like it’s flying by (because it really does!)

That said, newborn sessions definitely don’t have to happen exactly at the two‑week mark to be beautiful. Every baby is different, and some parents prefer photos that feel more time to get settled after having a newborn. Whatever feels most comfortable to you is going to be best! If your session happens a little earlier or later, we’ll still create meaningful, timeless images.

When to Book Your Newborn Session

As a newborn photographer in Parker, Colorado, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester. This gives us plenty of time to plan and ensures you’ll have a spot reserved on my calendar — newborn availability can fill quickly.

Booking during the second trimester allows us to:

  • Secure your session before life gets busy
  • Discuss your vision, style, and any special details
  • Plan for flexibility around your due date
  • Take one thing off your to‑do list before the third trimester

Early planning means less stress later, especially when you’re soaking in those final weeks of pregnancy.

How Newborn Sessions Are Scheduled

Newborn sessions are booked based on your due date, not a fixed session date. Once your baby arrives, you can let me know, and we’ll choose a session date that works best for you and your family. If you have an induction date, that works great too. We can plan accordingly!

And because I’ve been doing this for a while, I know one very important thing: babies are not always concerned about timing — and that’s totally okay!

I intentionally build flexibility into my schedule so we can adjust as needed. Whether your baby arrives early, late, or right on time, we’ll find a session date that feels right for you.

A Gentle Reminder for New Parents

The newborn stage is short, emotional, and often a blur. You don’t need to have everything perfect to have beautiful photos. Don’t worry about your house being Pinterest-worthy or to have everything about motherhood figured out. Your only job is to love your baby — I’ll take care of the rest. I promise I will flatter you and make beautiful images out of what can sometimes feel like a chaotic postpartum experience.

If you’re expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Parker, Colorado, I’d love to help you plan a newborn session that feels relaxed, meaningful, and true to your family.

When you’re ready, reach out early, and we’ll take it from there!

My sister had her third baby on New Year’s Eve and I got to fly to Utah to capture some newborn photos. From the outfits to the home decor, everything worked together beautifully.

This newborn session could’ve been straight out of a pottery-barn magazine. Every detail in the nursery was perfect for this sweet baby boy! I may have been a little biased towards the little guy because Clay is my husband’s name too. It was such a dreamy session!

Thanks for subscribing. I'll be in touch soon!
